The summer holidays are here and that means it’s peak season for family days out.
Family days out can be awesome as well as gruelling, especially if you’re traveling in a hot stuffy car with kids! If you follow us on Instagram then you’ll know I, David, spend 90% of my life in the car. This makes me an expert at car travel, kind of.
After spending 763 hours per week (This might be slightly exaggerated) in the car, I’ve picked up a few tricks that make car travel with kids that bit easier.

I don’t want to hear any moaning about parents that throw their kid an iPad or about screen time limitations. If you’re on a long journey there’s only so much eye-spy and spot the yellow cars you can do. Take an iPad or tablet and they’ll watch away nicely with no bother.
Adding onto this tip, get them their own little funky headphones like we did for Corben and you can still butcher Ed Sheeran songs at will, not causing them any bother. In turn, listening to that same video they watch on repeat won’t send you crazy either.
EVEN MORE! If you haven’t got a 3/4G iPad or Tablet then download episodes of their favourite shows from Netflix, Amazon or YouTube the night before the journey using WiFi. No internet required for the journey and they’ll still have loads to watch.
Drinks and Snacks
This one is a biggy for me. If you’re on a decent journey, 2 hours+ they’re going to get hungry. Make sure you put together a decent selection of drinks and snacks and bang them in a cooler box. Chocolate, crisps, juices or carrot batons if you’re healthier than we are!
If you don’t have a cooler box then the day before you set off, get some bags of ice ready to throw into the lunch boxes with the food, it’ll do for a good few hours to last your journey. Long journeys in particular during summer time heatwaves are a ball ache to start with, don’t make it worse by having a car full of HANGRY people.
Bluetooth playlist, for any car!
Those of you with bluetooth ready cars, well done! HA! The rest of you that fall into our bracket, I’ve got a solution for you. Multifunction Wireless Car MP3 Player. Basically you plug this beauty into your car, that port that holds in-car chargers I don’t know the official name, you then pair the device via bluetooth with your phone and tune it to a certain radio frequency so it links to your car stereo.
BOOM! Bang on your favourite playlist and get the tunes blazing through your car stereo. OK, what I meant was, bang on the CBeebies soundtrack and be thankful it’s slightly better than listening to the kids moan for several hours.
Extra tip now you have a bluetooth car, create a road trip playlist. Everyone pick a couple of songs, put them all on one playlist and listen away, everyone’s happy and you can have a good laugh singing along.
This is how we stay sane during long car journeys with the kids. Actually we have 7 seats and throw one of them right in the back, that helps too! Hope these tips help you this summer, have some awesome days out and safe travels 🙂
