Corben is 6 this coming week so it’s about time he started paying his own way. Kids can only sponge off you for so long before they need to start earning their own crust.
Corben is becoming increasingly interested in several things we do now, blogging/vlogging etc and with that in mind we’ve decided to cut him in on the family business. OK, basically he likes it when brands send him stuff to try out and now and again likes shaking his bum on camera. We’re taking this as an indicator that he’s ready to become more actively involved.
As Donetta and I both work from home, we have our own workspaces. Corben has been doing his ‘work’ on either of our desks or generally wherever he wants as 6 year old’s do. We decided it would be a cool idea to head off to IKEA and get Corben his own workspace area for all of his toy reviews and future gaming videos he’s said he would like to create in the near future. We’re planning on getting him a PS4 for his birthday with a couple of his favourite games so he can start creating some gaming videos, he loves it. I’m not sure there will be a full on channel or whether the videos will actually go out online, but he really likes the idea and process of filming himself gaming and creating a video to watch back.
We went to IKEA and grabbed him a new desk and chair and he can then kit it out as we go along to make it his own space. I’m hoping to use our blogging collaborations to help teach him a little appreciation too and for him to learn things don’t come for free you have to work for them. I like the idea of him understanding that he will get toys, treats and products at times when it’s not his birthday or Christmas, but he will have to do a little work such as take a few pictures and review them. We mean this in a lighthearted sort of way, obviously we’re not literally putting him on the payroll and forcing 8 hour shifts out of him. I think it would be a healthy lesson for him to learn though. Also, he actually likes doing it so it’s win win.
Having his own desk is massively beneficial for other reasons too, such as his love for drawing and ultimately his Home Education journey. He loves drawing and uses paper up like it’s going out of fashion, he has a really admirable creative streak. As many of you will know by now we also home educate so it acts as his place to do other learning tasks too. Much of his learning to be fair is out and about, but now and again we do have to squeeze in a little traditional learning where we chain him to a desk and tell him there’s no toilet breaks until he passes today’s test… Obviously a joke!
On another note, I managed to get Donetta in and out of IKEA without having to film an IKEA HAUL! We did film a video of our day though which you can watch…
So now Corben is on the payroll and fully integrated into the family business, he’s open to opportunities. Toy reviews, days out, clothing and anything else. You can use our email firstname.lastname@example.org HA! 🙂
Thanks for reading,
David and Donetta 🙂
